Nature Pre-School Workshop!

We are delighted to announce that Antioch University New England will be holding a daylong workshop entitled “Nature Pre-Schools and Forest Kindergartens” from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16th. The day will open with a talk by David Sobel, who was featured in Mother Nature’s Child and whose terrific new book Wild Play was published last year. The schedule also includes field trips, sessions with childhood educators, and lunch. The Harris Center for Conservation Education and Sophia’s Hearth Family Center are co-sponsoring the event. The Jan/Feb 2012 issue of ORION Magazine features “Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist”, a thought-provoking article by writer and poet — and former environmental activist — Paul Kingsnorth. The article was so interesting that we signed on to listen to ORION’s webcast conversation with Kingsnorth, activist and author Lierre Keith, and cultural ecologist and philosopher David Abram, author of The Spell of the Sensuous and Becoming Animal. (Can’t recommend Abram’s books highly enough!) Their hour long conversation about the state of the environment, the trajectory of the environmental movement itself, and the very future of civilization was personal, honest, and deeply moving. Coyote’s Guide to Connecting with Nature

Once you’ve been inspired by Mother Nature’s Child to learn more about how to reconnect yourself, your children and your community with nature, read Coyote’s Guide to Connecting with Nature by Jon Young (featured in the film), Ellen Haas, and Evan McGown. The book is much more than an innovative how-to manual, it’s a fun read that also clearly explains both the history and benefits of this growing movement to re-invigorate ourselves and our communities through more connection with the natural world. It’s really about waking up to all the facets of being alive, expanding our “edges” of awareness. A wonderful resource, not only for teachers, parents and mentors, but for all of us!

Have you heard about pediatricians prescribing time in nature for their patients? Studies show that being outside in nature relieves stress, combats obesity, and reduces asthma and ADHD in children. The Parks & People Foundation in Baltimore, MD — who generously assisted us with our Baltimore shoot for Mother Nature’s Child — supports this effort with a “Docs in the Park” program as part of their Greater Baltimore Children and Nature Collaborative. A fantastic idea: prescribe outdoor activity instead of prescription drugs! A terrific way to support not only physical health but a child’s emotional balance, intellectual curiosity and, best of all, sense of wonder! We hope this idea will spread to pediatric practices everywhere.

On Saturday, December 17th from 10 – 11 a.m. PST, the San Francisco radio station Green 960 AM, will broadcast an interview with tracker Jon Young and author Richard Louv on “An Organic Conversation”. The program discusses innovative solutions to today’s environmental and social challenges within the context of interconnectedness and spirituality. The title of their interview is “No Child Left Behind: Addressing Our Disconnect From Nature.” Both Jon and Rich were featured in Mother Nature’s Child and their conversation will no doubt be dynamic and inspiring! Our clips in Mother Nature’s Child show Ali Smith, Atman Smith and Andy Gonzalez taking elementary school kids out of their concrete inner city Baltimore neighborhoods to explore the woods of Leakin Park. (Remember that dance on the stone wall: “Nature is the place to go!”) This week NBC’s Nightly News segment “Making a Difference” featured their indoor mentoring — teaching yoga and meditation to kids in public schools.
