The Family Literacy Center of Central Vermont Community Action Council in Barre, Vermont will present Mother Nature’s Child on May 17th as part of an integrated study about nature awareness, nature deficit disorder and the effects of media on children. This is not a public event but part an educational program for pregnant and parenting teens. What a great offering to new young parents, providing a basic understanding of the significant health benefits of time in nature for their children!
As a follow up activity, on May 19th, parents and their children will spend the day together in the woods of Goddard College engaging in nature awareness activities facilitated by program partner, EarthWalk Vermont. During production of the film, we visited EarthWalk’s program and were awed by the work of Angella Gibbons and her staff. Check them out! EarthWalk Vermont provides a wonderful model for nature-based partnerships and collaborations with public schools and other agencies. EarthWalk’s educational approach, called Cultural Mentoring, is taught all over the world by naturalist, tracker and author Jon Young, one of the featured experts in Mother Nature’s Child. We hope to post clips from our interview with Jon in upcoming posts on this site. In the meantime, we suggest getting in touch with EarthWalk and paying them a visit.
